In my ongoing efforts to decapitalise myself, it’s so helpful to come across Substacks such as yours! Thank you! Am I understanding correctly that you suggest forming a group to sign up to this kind of hosting platform (as this would help to manage the hosting costs)? Am wondering if there are any options I might have as an individual (non-techie) to get off Google?
That's such a lovely idea - thank you for sharing this. My bioregion is in Goa, India. I'm still in the process of understanding what such a transition would mean, in terms of the functionalities that google offers which could be replaced by NextCloud. Hope you can bear with me while I explore the website - I'm afraid I'm not very techie. Would be interested, also, to explore gathering a community together in Goa who might be interested to go for something like this together - just need to fully understand what functionalities we would be "swapping out" :)
Amazing! I appreciate you taking the time to learn.
NextCloud specializes in Cloud File storage (like Google Docs, Google Sheets, etc) -- but they have expanded with an OpenSource ecosystem that allows us to build anything. They can also replace email, text chat, video meetings... all the way to niche applications like "co-spending" and project management tools.
Yes, finding an aligned group in your BioRegion would be key. If I were to host one myself, it would be closer to me. But I would be delighted to help your group get set up.
I look forward to these latest developments on open sourcing. I have long been a user and supporter of these technologies, dating back 25 years when I set up my first Joomla install and added mrbs to the mix.
Here is my problem. It is just so easy to use the Google platform. It would seem that the current wave of OS enthusiasts are still Linux based computer geeks. Until you make user interface easy, I will stick with my google docs and sheets.

I have considered taking on the tech load myself to create a BioHarmony Community hosted instance of NextCloud, that I could invite you to.
What is your BioRegion, and how much would you able to contribute to hosting costs?

Have you tried NextCloud yet? It has a full document solution for sheets/pages, with all the main features as Google docs or MS word.
